Introduction to the Turaga
|
|
|
The First Turagas were appointed when Mata Nui first came to the island. They are the priests/leaders
of the villages. The tools they carry have been passed down from Turaga to Turaga, and so are the Noble
Masks of Power, or they were before Makuta scattered them across the land. Another one of their roles
is the lore-keepers of the villages.

(Kongu speaks) Le-Koro is a wondrous treetop village (which you probably wouldn't notice if you
were just passing through, it is disguised to protect it from the creatures that lurk beneath), thriving
with Tohunga and other creatures swinging on vines through the jungle (me the fastest among them). It
is above the dreaded swamp, where Rahi dwell. It is a sight to be seen, one that draws those Tohunga
from miles just to see the treetop spectacle of Le-Koro.

Matau is the best Turaga anyone can wish for. He is the friendliest Tohunga I have ever met. Like
Matoro said about Nuju, don't let first impressions disillusion you about Matau. At first he seems calm
and composed, the opposite to his Toa counterpart. Watch your back though, or he'll play one of his jokes!
We Tohunga of Le-Koro just think his jokes are funny. But it seems no one else can take a joke (particularly
not the Tohunga of Ta-Koro!). When there are pressing matters at hand, Matau turns into his warrior mode.
He is a loyal warrior and is as courageous as the Toa. Matau's tool is the Kau Kau Staff.

(Matoro speaks) In the treacherous snowy reaches of Mount Ihu lays the wondrous village of Ko-Koro.
The Ice Bridges are something that draws Tohunga from all around. All of these amazing bridges were built
by the Tohunga of Ko-Koro in honor of the great Kopaka.

|
Do not let first impressions disillusion you about Nuju. When you first meet him, he seems much like
Kopaka, but when you get to know him, he is kind and good. He is a reknowned storyteller. When he is
telling a story he does not speak in words but in gestures and whistles. This is where I fit in. I am
the only Tohunga on Mata Nui who knows this 'language' and can translate it for the rest of the Tohunga.
The tool Nuju carries, passed down from each generation of Turagas, is the Ice Pick.

(Onepu speaks) Near the Papu Niho Reef, deep under the ground, you will find the mining
city of Onu-Koro. This is where the famous Ussal Crab races take place. Tohunga who come from elsewhere
on the island find it to be a dark maze of tunnels and caverns dug deep in and beneath the cliffs. Do
not be afraid to enter the darkness of the tunnels, although many think that creatures of Makuta or even
Makuta himself dwell in the shadows. Let me assure you, he does not. I am alive, aren't I?
|

Whenua is a stout hearted and good Turaga. He supervises the digging in Onu-Koro. He has sharper
senses than any other Tohunga, and knows before it happens when a tunnel is going to collapse or when
the Rahi are above the village. On the Turaga Council, he is often consulted for his wisdom, fairness,
good judgement and logical thinking. The tool he carries is the Drill of Onua.

(Hafu speaks) Located at the base of Mount Ihu, Po-Koro is a wasteland village where
the Tohunga live in stone, dome houses and it is renknowned for it's immensely popular Koli matches.
It's bustling bazaar is also well known all around Mata Nui. Lately it has not been so bustling because
of troubles spawned from Makuta's coming.

|
No Tohunga is as stout in body and in mind as Onewa. He is revered for his strength, and his points
are not (and better not, even if he ever made an arguable point) argued with. He moves faster than most
on difficult terrain, and slower than most on easy terrain. He is as solid as Pohatu (well, not quite)
and is a tough opponent, especially armed with that mighty hammer of his.
|
|

(Maku speaks) Ga-Koro is a village on the water, made up of a series of giant waterlilies and
seaweed. Located in and around Lake Naho, it is a spacious village that spreads into the surrounding
rivers. The Tohunga could always be seen swimming and fishing in the surrounding waters, only where they
knew it was safe, of course. Some of the waters in this area are treacherous.
|

No Tohunga is as skilled in the ways of the ocean and waterways as Nokama. She is a good swimmer
and good sailer. Already a master of languages, the Kanohi Rau enhances this gift. She is the mediator
of the Turaga Council (which, Nokama has admitted to me, can be argumentative). She arms herself with
a large trident.

|
 |

(Jala speaks) Ta-Koro, located in and around an underground lava river of the Mangai Volcano,
flourishes in the midst of fire. It is a bustling village, resembling a series of small volcanoes, with
sights that never cease to amaze. Seeing lava surfing is a sight that draws Tohunga from all around Mata
Nui. You probably wonder how safe it is to be living in such a place. Although the Mangai Volcano still
spews molten rock and fire, Ta-Koro has been placed expertly to avoid these eruptions.

|
Turaga Vakama is a fearless, strong and good leader. He is known for these things, as well as his
fiery temper. He is a warrior who's courage is surpassed only by the Toa. Armed with the great Firestaff,
he makes even the bravest (excluding the Toa) tremble in fear.
